Achievement, Leadership, and Service awards were among those awards given at the May 21 high school awards assembly.

Outstanding Musicians and Athletes and recipients of Beth Berry, Heidi Claassen, Marlin Miller, and Cup of Kindness awards.Receiving outstanding senior athlete awards were Ben Bontreger and Marla zumFelde. Outstanding musicians included instrumentalists Ji Eun Han and Taylor Ann Krahn and vocalists Cory Bowman and Chris Minter.

Each year the school purchases a student art piece. Selected for this year’s Art Purchase Award was senior Shina Park for her pencil drawing. Art teacher Hannah Gerig Meyer says, “Shina is a very talented visual artist. She is skilled in a variety of media and can render her subjects accurately with great precision and technical skill. Shina is excited and passionate about her work and has a desire to further her talents. She seeks opportunities to use her skills and continually practice. While the composition is somewhat abstract, the viewer is still able to pick up on recognizable elements that keep it engaging and interesting. There is a great range of values, from the white of the paper to the dark shadows with smoothly blended transitions in between. This drawing exemplifies Shina’s careful attention to value, detail, and creativity.” The original artwork is displayed in the Bethany hallway, along with works of past art purchase awards.

Ellie Schertz received the Cup of Kindness Award for exhibiting exceptional kindness in helping other students to understand and learn, treats people with respect, and demonstrates a concern for those in need. She has positive spirit and attends most athletic events to cheer on her peers. Teachers commented, “She is an attentive listener, aware of other’s around her, does not put herself before others, and is always willing to help other students and teachers—and always with a smile on her face. Recently she voluntarily took over handing out and collecting papers, erasing the board, and other tasks for a teacher who had sprained her wrist.

Mattie Lehman received the Heidi Claassen Achievement Award. This scholarship reflects the life accomplishments of Heidi, co-valedictorian of the class of 2003, who succumbed to her three-year battle with leukemia one month after her graduation. This award recognized the top-ranking senior who will earn the Indiana Academic Honors Diploma, completes at least one semester of either calculus or physics at Bethany, and plans to attend a Mennonite college.

Ben Miller received the Marlin Miller Memorial Scholarship in recognition of a senior senior displaying gifts and strong interest in preparing for Christian leadership and service in the church. The scholarship was established by the graduating class of 1957 in memory of Marlin Miller, former president of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart and class president as a senior here at Bethany. In September Ben plans to enter Mission Year, a year-long urban ministry program based in Atlanta, Ga.

Eva Lapp received the Beth Berry Peace and Justice Award for her involvement in promoting peace and justice in the school and community. This award is named for a former teacher who in her years at Bethany shared her conviction that "world peace begins at home" with both her colleagues and students in ways that continue to inspire us to reach beyond ourselves and love our neighbors. The vision and purpose of this award is to recognize a graduating senior who show a commitment to seek justice, their desire to make peace, and their vision for society that brings dignity to all people by thinking globally and acting locally.
