7 Alum Earn Honors

Six Bethany alumni received 9 of Goshen College’s 15 journalism awards at the Indiana Press Association’s annual awards for 2011—and a seventh received a radio award. Additionally, the school’s student-run newspaper, The Record, took second place in newspaper division III (non-daily newpapers with enrollment under 3,000), led by editors Laura Schlabach (’06) and Marlys Weaver (’06).

Schlabach and Weaver combined for two second-place awards in overall design and single issue. Schlabach received three additional awards: first in in-depth story (with Chase Snyder) and seconds in feature story and sports layout. Weaver received third place in news/feature story with two others. Also receiving awards were Keith Beber (’05) and Kevin Kleptz (’06), second in non-deadline story (with Brett Bridges); Martin Brubaker (’07), second in sports photo; and Andrea Kraybill (’06), second in feature photo.

Trisha Handrich (’07) received second in radio air personality. Handrich is the student station manager for the campus radio station, WGCS 91.1 FM The Globe. In March 2011 the station was selected as the best college station in the nation by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System, competing against more than 700 colleges and universities across the nation.
