State Releases 2008 ISTEP Scores
97% increase scores! Bethany students once again excelled on the state-mandated ISTEP exam with fall 2008 results above state averages. The state requires students currently in grades 10-12 to pass the grade 10 exam before receiving a diploma. All seniors (class of '09) have passed with the exception of one international student still needing to pass the English portion. In first-round testing last year 86% of juniors passed, compared to less than 60% statewide. In this year's first-round testing, 80% of sophomores passed, compared with 57% statewide. Beginning with the class of 2012 (ninth-graders), students will be required to pass state end-of-course assessments in Algebra I and English, rather than taking the traditional ISTEP tests.
Bethany guidance counselor Jim Buller says, "Our grade 10 test scores were once again strong and illustrate the academic strength of our students and their preparedness for taking the test."
Middle school scores were lower than last year, but still above state averages. Buller notes, "This drop in scores is largely due to new international students who are testing in their second language one month after entering the U.S. And of course sixth grade scores reflect what students know upon entering Bethany. Of students who returned to Bethany, 97% increased one or both scores, in some cases significantly."
Following are the fall 2008 results (grade 9 does not take this test).
