Spiritual Life Week
March 17-20 the high school's Spiritual Life Week will focus on Micah 6:8: "And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." This theme of justice was chosen because it fits with other school events/settings that are also focusing on justice: the February drama performance of Dead Man Walking that addressed the death penalty and other issues, the March 7 Spring Arts Day, and classes such as English and Bible discussing pacifism and just war.
We are immersed in a culture which considers justice in terms of revenge or punishment. During Spiritual Life Week the focus will be on the question "What does it mean to do justice?" Our speakers have been asked to provide some theological or theoretical context, and to describe in concrete terms how they might "do justice."
On Monday, March 17, Jonny Meyer ('04) and Kelly Shenk ('04) will share from their experiences in a Goshen College class they took on being white. On Tuesday, March 18, Joe Liechty will speak from his experience working with reconciliation, particularly in Ireland. On Wednesday, March 18, Karl Shelly will speak from his experiences with the legal system and with Mennonite Central Committee. On Thursday, March 20, Bethany staff will lead the student body in some reflections and responses.
