Hazards of Smoking
Former Tobacco Magnate to Speak Aug. 26
Patrick Reynolds, a former tobacco magnate turned anti-smoking leader, will speak to Bethany students about the hazards of smoking in an assembly on Friday, Aug. 26. Reynolds, the grandson of tobacco company founder R. J. Reynolds, became the first tobacco industry figure to cross over to the other side after watching his father and other relatives die from smoking-related illnesses. He has publicly testified against the cigarette industry in Congress and has become an outspoken opponent of tobacco companies as executive director of the Foundation for a Smokefree America.
At Bethany he will share his personal story, emphasize the addictiveness of tobacco, and show slides on how the tobacco industry targets youth. His inspirational message of hope includes his vision of the coming smokefree society.
