Welcome

A Welcome from our Principal

I warmly welcome you to Bethany Christian Schools—a school for students in grades 4-12 where Christian growth and learning go hand-in-hand.

Students at Bethany enjoy many opportunities to develop their gifts in athletics, drama, music, leadership, and academic competition. They experience the satisfaction of serving others and develop friendships with other students and with teachers, friendships that often last a lifetime.

Bethany provides an extraordinary learning experience, within a community of Christian faith. Whether you're a current or prospective student, parent, alumnus, or friend of Bethany Christian Schools, I invite you to discover the Bethany difference!

Allan Dueck
Principal

A Welcome from our Student Body Association Co-Presidents

Welcome to the Bethany website. Feel free to spend some time looking around the site, getting to know the school in depth.

With small class sizes, students are able to get personal attention from the teachers, creating a close community that goes beyond academics. Teachers are free to weave faith into their lesson plans, and students are encouraged to ask questions that challenge.

Extracurricular activities are a large part of students' lives at Bethany. We have many different opportunities to participate in: yearbook, newspaper, choir, orchestra, drama, musical, Chess Club, to name just a few. And that's not even including athletics, where Bethany teams have won numerous sectional and conferences titles.

The Student Body Association, or SBA, is the way in which students are represented at Bethany. As the student government, we organize various activities for the student body, including all-school parties, tailgating for athletic events, and fundraisers. Currently, the SBA is leading a school-wide project to sponsor a child through Compassion International. We've been sponsoring Robert, a child from Tanzania. We feel that this is a great project for our student body to take on.

Bethany is a unique place for students to learn and grow together in faith and their lives. We highly encourage you to take a look around.

Discover the Difference

A Bethany education addresses the whole person: intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and spirtual. A strong academic program and a rich variety of extracurricular activities such as art, drama, music, and athletics prepare Bethany students for a well-rounded life. We encourage you to visit the campus in person and experience the Bethany difference. A friendly welcome awaits you.

Christ-Centered Education

Teachers are at the heart of a Christ-centered school. For them, teaching is not just a job, but a calling. Our teachers, coaches, administrators, and staff model Christ's love to students and incorporate the teachings of Jesus into the classroom, athletics, and daily work. Students explore Christ's call on their lives, seeking a faith they can own.

Academic Excellence

Through vibrant, creative, and student-oriented education, Bethany meets the needs of diverse learners and empowers all students to embrace academic challenges. To prepare students for college and career success, Bethany provides challenging experiential learning at all levels, including advanced courses in all core subject areas and the fine arts. Between 80 and 90 percent of our graduates go on to college. In addition, we provide academic assistance for students with special needs.

Bethany accomplishments include:

  • Average of nearly two National Merit Scholarship finalists per year during the past 10 years--six times the national average
  • One of the highest average SAT scores among Northern Indiana schools
  • One of the top five schools in the state in Hoosier Academic Superbowl each year since 1997
  • National recognition for its innovative Environmental Science course

Personal Development

We nurture the spiritual, academic, artistic, and social gifts of all students and unleash these gifts to further God's work in the world. Teachers and coaches mentor students to cultivate leadership skills through the Leadership Development program, a process that provides goals, teaching tools, and evaluation of skills for students in various leadership roles. As a small school Bethany gives students opportunities to develop their skills and interests in multiple areas simultaneously.

Community and Friendship

Within a diverse faith-based community, Bethany fosters respectful and compassionate relationships among students, faculty, staff, and the church. The expectation is that we do things together-learn, work, serve, and worship.

As a small school, Bethany places priority on relationships. Teachers become more than just teachers-they become mentors and friends. In middle school, teachers help youth build respectful and compassionate relationships, using resources from the Ophelia Project.

In the high school, students and teachers are on a first-name basis with each other. At Bethany, people take an interest in each other and build lasting friendships that provide a sense of belonging.

The Bethany Difference

A Bethany we provide a holistic educational package to prepare our students for a well-rounded life. According to parents, the attention to social, emotional, and spiritual growth is the added value that makes Bethany a great investment.

If you want a school with these characteristics, consider Bethany Christian Schools.

Visiting a school is one of the most important steps in making a selection. We encourage you to see the campus in person and experience the Bethany difference.

Admission to Bethany Christian Schools is open to all qualified students regardless of race, creed or ethnic background.

What Others Say

“Bethany’s high academic standards and encouragement to participate in extracurricular activities prepared me to handle the intense and rigorous coursework at college while continuing my involvement in extracurriculars.” —Sierra Germeyan (’09), Williams College, ranked the No. 1 liberal arts college by U.S. News and World Report

“My wife and I have chosen to educate our children at Bethany because of its strong track record of academic excellence in preparing students for success in college.” —Yatin J. Patel, MD MBA

“Bethany has given me so many opportunities that I could not experience in my home country, and I feel I’m well prepared for college. I’ve made some great friends and love living with my host parents—I'm truly a part of their family.” —Sang Hyoun Han (’11), four-year student from South Korea

“My superb high school education allowed me to begin college with a head start. Bible classes provided an important space for me to ask challenging questions within a supportive faith community. This was invaluable for me and the beginning of a journey that led me to attend seminary after college, with the hopes of someday becoming a teacher myself.”
—Jonny Gerig Meyer, 2004 National Merit Finalist
“The fact that Bethany is smaller makes it easier to know people—even people who aren’t in the same grade. The many choices that Bethany gives when choosing activities or sports are wonderful.” —Olivia, middle school student

The denomination's Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective serves as the foundational theological document for Bethany. What follows is a thumbnail list of core convictions of Mennonite Church USA, which are spelled out in greater detail in Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective:

  • We worship a loving God who created all things and continues to sustain them. God created human beings in God's image, to be in relationship with God, to love others, and to take care of the created world.
  • God's love for the world was embodied in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, through whom we are reconciled to God as we confess our sin and self-centeredness. We place our hope in God's ultimate victory over evil and death.
  • The biblical story teaches us that God loves all people and invites us into relationship. God longs for relationship with people from every race, ethnicity, and nation.
  • As we feel God's call, we respond through baptism and church membership.
  • The Bible, the Holy Spirit, and the wisdom of the church community guide us in living faithfully as followers of Jesus. The Holy Spirit empowers us to fulfill God's purposes for the world.
  • We believe God has given each person gifts for ministry, gifts to be used to build the church and proclaim Christ to the world.
  • God intends us to participate in God's way by living with integrity, embracing peace and nonviolence, and seeking justice and wholeness for humanity and for all creation. Our service, mission, and stewardship are grateful responses to God's generosity.

Mennonite education affiliation and accreditation: Bethany Christian Schools is a member of the Mennonite Schools Council (MSC), a network of about 35 pre-K through 12 Mennonite schools serving more than 10,000 students in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada. In partnership with the church, the Mennonite Schools Council advances Christ-centered PreK-12 education by networking schools and equipping them to implement the vision of Anabaptist/Mennonite education. In 2007-08, Bethany completed requirements for accreditation by the Mennonite Education Agency (MEA), which oversees Christian education from pre-K through seminary on behalf of the Mennonite Church USA.

Financial Information

Invest in your children's future.

Bethany provides an excellent education that prepares students to succeed beyond high school. Of course providing a quality private education to give our children the best does have a financial cost, but one that hundreds of parents have found to be worth the investment. We hope that will be true for you too.

The cost of a Bethany education varies based on your family's circumstances.  The following links provide information on programs that reduce the cost of tuition for many Bethany families.  Please contact our admissions office to find out what the cost is for you.

Boarding and Application Process

Goshen and Elkhart County

Goshen, Indiana, is known as the Maple City because of its many maple trees. The city offers many diverse cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities, including biking and walking trails, canoeing and kayaking opportunities, and easy access to snow skiing, beaches, boating, white water rafting, camping, and hiking. Goshen has small town values and charm, while offering activities and experiences often found in larger nearby cities. Mennonites, and Amish, were among the early settlers in this area, first arriving in 1831. While you can still see Amish driving horse-pulled buggies on our streets, Goshen is a dynamic and growing community of over 31,000 residents nestled in the center of the northern Indiana county of Elkhart.

Living Arrangements

Bethany provides two housing options for boarding students. Below is a brief description of each option:

  1. Violett House: Bethany maintains an international student residence on campus where up to five students live in a supervised intentional community-type setting. The home itself is a beautiful brick farm house built in 1850, and is on the National Historic Registry of Homes.
  2.

  3. Host Families: Most international students live with a Bethany host family, which is caring, friendly and genuinely interested in welcoming students into their home. Once we assign a host family it is expected that the student will remain there for one academic year. Term extensions are allowable upon review.

Host families are carefully chosen after background checks, personal interviews and home inspections. Bethany maintains communication with the host family throughout the year.

For more detailed information, see Residential Program Guidelines.

Guidelines

Welcome to Bethany Christian Schools student residential life! We hope that all boarding students will experience their host family situation to be comfortable and nurturing and that they will be willing to grow and cooperate within their host family structure. We also hope that Bethany host families will experience joy and blessing in sharing their home and lives with someone from another culture or outside of their immediate family.

The following guidelines will assist both the guest student and the host family in understanding the expectations of Bethany Christian’s international and guest students within the host family situation. We trust that in sharing a common understanding the hosting situation can be a mutually satisfying experience.

Community and Respect

Living with a host family means living as a part of a community. To maintain a positive community environment, we understand the importance of having respect for others, for property, and for the guidelines and rules that have been established by the host family.

Living with a Bethany host family is a privilege and will be a time of growth for all involved. Knowing that structure and boundaries are essential for group living and learning responsibility, guest students will abide by the expectations of Bethany Christian Schools and the host family’s house rules. A positive attitude toward these expectations will help to make community living a better experience.

Language

English is the common language that is to be spoken at all times both at school and home, unless in a private space with friends who share the same native language, or in communication with those in your home country.

Communication Between Guest Students and Host Families

It is Bethany’s expectation that clear two way communication is happening at all times between guest students and host parents. Guest students are expected to ask permission from and coordinate with their host families when they plan to stay after school for activities, spend the night away from their host home, attend or participate in a social function, wish to participate in extracurriculars, etc. Host parents care about their guest students and both want and need to know where they are at all times. Before permission will be granted, the host family will be consulted and the following information will be provided:

  • where you will be
  • who you will be with
  • a number where you can be reached
  • what you will be doing
  • when you will be back

Guest students will be expected to comply with the curfew arranged between the guest student and host parents.  The following curfews are suggested:

  • Friday/Saturday- home by 12:00/12:30 a.m. quiet and in bedroom
  • Sunday-Thursday- home by 9:30/10:30 p.m. quiet and in bedroom

Activities and Privileges

Bethany expects that guest students will participate in the activities of the host family including:

  1. Participating in family meals and being polite about the food that is provided
  2. Assisting with household chores as requested by the host parents
  3. Taking advantage of the opportunity to experience the social activities of your host family, for example; joining in family games, going shopping together, enjoying a Saturday morning breakfast, sharing cooking responsibilities, watching or going to a movie together, etc.
  4. Participating in church and church activities with the host family. If student attends Korean Church on Sunday afternoons, participation in host family’s church is not mandatory.

Although not required, it is STRONGLY recommended that all Korean students attend the Korean church fellowship that meets at Waterford Mennonite Church on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m.

Housing/Bedroom Arrangements

In many cases, students will have their own bedroom. However, students should consider how their study habits and recreational use of technology affects those around them (including, but not limited to computer and cell phone). The host family will expect that students maintain a balanced and healthy extracurricular/school work/sleep routine. If the balance begins to interfere with family life or is no longer healthy, adjustments will be expected.

Students are responsible for keeping their own room clean and neat.

Money Matters

Guest students and their biological parents are responsible for Bethany school tuition/fees and the cost of lunches on school days. These matters must be dealt with directly between the biological family and the school.

Students are also responsible to cover the cost of all school supplies and toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, soap, etc.) and other incidental items they wish to purchase during the year. This can be handled in a number of ways, for example, with a credit card provided by the guest student’s biological parents, or via a checking account into which the biological family wires money.

Most large bills are handled through the school office directly with the biological family. If the host parents receive a bill from a teacher for a school related expense, for example, choir or orchestra tour, etc, they should turn the bill in to the school business office where it will be added to the student’s account.

Bethany requests that host parents refrain from loaning money to their guest students.

Insurance/Health Information

Guest students are required to provide proof of insurance and full immunization records to the school office.

In the cases where emergency medical care is required, host parents will access treatment at the nearest emergency room, urgent care center, or other appropriate facility (dental, mental health, etc.). It is recommended that routine medical and dental care occur during school breaks in the guest student’s home environment under the supervision of their biological families. If non-urgent medical care must be provided during the school year, care may be sought at the host family physician’s office.

Sports physicals will be obtained (for free) each spring for returning students for the following year’s athletic seasons. New students who wish to participate in sports must obtain a sports physical at their own expense prior to beginning athletic practices.

Communication with Biological Family/Signing Official Documents

Host families may want/need to communicate with biological parents during the school year. Guest students are expected to provide current and accurate contact information for their biological parents to both the school and their host parents.

Please note that biological families may not speak English, in which case creativity will have to be employed.

Host parents are considered guardians and as such are authorized to sign Permission for Treatment and Travel forms (if not signed by biological parents) and school permission slips for involvement in school year activities.

The school office will make every effort to have Enrollment Confirmation/Intent to Return packets prepared for students to take home with them at the Christmas holidays. Failure to bring the packets back to Bethany in January will necessitate the student obtaining their biological parent’s signature for these forms by fax, scan, or mail by the deadline. Back-to-School Packets will be mailed during the summer to the student’s host family as well as biological family.

Bethany/Host Family Policies

Guest students are expected to abide by the behavior and conduct standards outlined in the Bethany Parent/Student Handbook on all matters. In addition, please note the following:

  1. TV: Individual TV’s are discouraged in bedrooms
  2. Computers: It is strongly recommended that guest students bring their own computer with them so that the host family maintains their own full access. Computers are a privilege. Host families may reserve the right to limit computer usage time.
  3. Music: At Bethany, we encourage students to thoroughly examine listening habits and choose music consistent with Bethany’s values and the mission of the school. Please respect your host family with regard to the content and volume of the music you choose to enjoy. If using headphones, please be aware of those around you and remove the headphones during family and large group times.
  4. Dress Code: Students must follow the school dress code stated in the student handbook. Bethany expects that after school and on the weekend guest student clothing styles and modesty levels will be consistent with the host family’s expectations and practice.
  5. Social Standards: Students are expected to follow the social standards for interaction between males and females that are outlined in the student handbook under “Student Relationships.”  In general terms Bethany operates a “hands off” policy.
  6. Host Family Discipline: The goal of any discipline system is to provide students with the opportunity to learn and grow; being challenged to exhibit their best behavior, respect for others, and to mature. It is hoped that discipline will not need to be levied by the host family while the guest student is living with them. However, in the event that discipline is required, host parents are encouraged to create a positive discipline system, trusting and giving privileges until the student proves that he/she needs more structure and boundaries. In the event that consequences are required, host parents are authorized to devise the best system to help the student. When the host family desires support and feedback they are welcome to contact the school or the International Student PTO Action Group, which meets regularly at The Brew on the second Monday evening of each month from 8-9 p.m.
  7. Transportation: Host parents are prepared to arrange transportation so guest students may get to where they NEED to be and often where they WANT to go. It is assumed that guest students will be respectful of the host family’s time and the other members of the family who also have needs that must be met.
  8. Property Damage at the Host Family Home: Students are responsible to report any damage they cause whether intentional or accidental. The damage will be assessed on an individual basis and the appropriate next steps will be taken. Bethany reserves the right to charge the full cost of the repair or replacement for damage to the student’s account. Deliberate damage should be reported for administrative action.
  9. Laundry: It is not assumed that the host family will provide laundry services for guest students. Students may be expected to do their own laundry and to coordinate with their host family to schedule convenient times to do so. If a guest student does not know how to operate the laundry machines, the host family will help them to learn.
  10. Telephone: For short local calls guest students are welcome to use the host family phone.  In situations where a host family uses only cell phones, only local calls will be permitted without a calling card. It is recommended that guest students provide their own cell phones and cell phone plans. Students may purchase a calling card or call collect when making long distance calls. Students should be courteous to others needing to use the phone.  It is suggested that students be off the phone by 10:30 p.m. unless given permission by their host parents. Please note that it is not polite to text on your cell phone in social settings. Remember to exercise consideration for others in the use of your cell phone.

Hospitality Homes

Hospitality homes are families that are associated with the school who desire to occasionally host students in Bethany’s residential program. This is an opportunity for students to experience a different family atmosphere, as well as offer the host families a break. Students are expected to treat the hospitality families with the utmost respect. Students will be expected to stay with their hospitality family one weekend each semester. In between hospitality homestays, families are encouraged to invite students out for special meals and/or activities, and attend school functions such as sporting events, concerts, and drama productions that the student is involved in.

Vacation

Host families are not encouraged to take guest students on vacations with them. Guest students are welcomed to visit their hospitality family or stay at another friend’s house during those times. Host families are not expected to house their guest students during the following holidays:

  • Christmas Break
  • Summer Break

Exceptions will be processed with the admissions director.

Airport Transportation

Host families are responsible to both pick up and drop off their students at the airport or arrange to see that this is done. When arranging transportation to and from the United States, guest students must provide their own transportation into and out of South Bend, Ind. The host parents are not expected to pick up/drop off students further away then South Bend.

International Student PTO Action Group

This PTO AG will be meeting regularly to support the work of Bethany Christian Schools’ residential student program, which primarily hosts students from international settings. The goals of this group are threefold:

  1. To support the administration in thoughtful process of issues surrounding the participation of international students at Bethany. Bethany coordinates two annual gatherings for the host families and their guest students:
    1. a pizza party in September
    2. an international potluck in March
  2. To support the households that agree to host international students with:
    1. connection to other host families and moral support (monthly meeting at The Brew, 2nd Monday of each month from 8 -9 p.m.)
    2. guidelines for hosting and contractual understanding of the commitment (contract agreed to and signed by host family, student, and Bethany representatives)
    3. information pertaining to medical care
    4. respite options and the organization of Hospitality Homes
    5. support when housing arrangements are not working well
  3. To serve as advocates for the international students in relation to:
    • physical needs (housing, food, physical activity, transportation)
    • emotional support
    • spiritual support
    • connections to the broader community

Length of Term

Typically host families agree to house guest students for a length of one (1) school year, from mid-August through May. Terms may be extended upon review by the school, host parents and guest students. Mid-term reviews will take place in early-mid November (via phone/email) and again in April-May of each year (via phone/email).

Additionally, there will be annual written review completed by both guest students and host families.

Host Family Changes

When a student or host family is seriously concerned about a situation, the following steps will be taken before any housing changes will be considered:

  1. The student will raise the concern with the admissions director so that the school understands there is a concern.
  2. The student and his/her host family will meet separately with the admissions director to explain their individual perspectives on the situation.
  3. The student and his/her host family will meet with the admissions director, guidance counselor and any other appropriate person (for example the chair of the International Student PTO AG, a Bible teacher, or another administrator) to work at conflict mediation, and to devise a satisfactory way forward.
  4. Any consideration of a housing change will happen after these meetings have occurred.  When necessary, the admissions director and guidance counselor will facilitate this process.
  5. Except in cases of an emergency, any changes will occur at the end of the current semester.

This procedure can take several weeks to resolve given the constraints of the schedules of those required to be involved in the process.

Questions

How many students attend Bethany?

  • About 250 students from grades 4-12
  • About 10% of students come from countries around the world, including South Korea, Canada, Japan, China, Brazil, and Paraguay.

What do I need to know about studying at Bethany?

  • Bethany requires a SLEP score for admission
  • NWEA testing is administered after the student arrives on campus. This allows Bethany to assess where students are academically at the time of their arrival, and serves as a guide in helping to select the best course schedule for an individual student. NWEA testing is done in three areas; Math, English, Language Usage
  • The guidance counselor will assist students with course selection once they have arrived at Bethany. In many cases the NWEA tests that are administered after arrival help in placing students in the appropriate courses for their educational development. The guidance counselor, host family and mentor teacher will also assist students as needed in navigating the college application process.
  • Mentoring is provided for every Bethany student. Mentors are Bethany faculty members who spend 15 minutes every two weeks in one-on-one conversation with students to talk about academic and social issues.
  • International student coordinator provides ongoing support to students within the host family setting.
  • Bethany operates on a two semester school year. Students take up to 8 courses (including 1-2 study periods) from mid-August to mid December (Semester 1) and then they take up to 8 different courses from mid January to the end of May (Semester 2). Students in grades 6-11 also earn 1 credit during J-term (see next bullet item). In total students can earn up to 15 credits each year. For an Indiana Core 40 High School Diploma, 40 credits are required. For a Core 40 with Academic or Technical Honors diploma, 47 credits must be earned.
  • J-Term: During the first two weeks of January, students in grades 9-11 take one course that meets all day and focuses on hands-on, experiential-learning (receive 1 credit). Middle school students take two courses with each meeting 1/2 day (receive .5 credit for each). All courses are on campus (possible short day trips) during the first week with high school courses having the option to travel during the second week (some courses may opt to run their second week in June instead of January). Seniors will participate one week each in job shadowing and a class trip.
  • Participation in extracurriculars is encouraged at Bethany. As a small school, students have full access to many opportunities. Most international students find enjoyment and challenge in the chance to participate in at least one of the following: sports, theater, music, speech and debate team, yearbook etc.

Transportation

Most students/families provide their own transportation to school or find rides with other students. Bethany can assist in providing contact information of other students/families in your vicinity for those looking for a possible carpool.

Bus Service

Beginning in fall 2011 Bethany plans to offer a daily transportation service with selected pick-up points in Elkhart and extending west to Granger and Mishawaka. For more information, contact Rachel Roth Sawatzky at 534-2567 or admissions@bethanycs.net.

UB Bruin Club

Students in grades 3-5 who are planning to attend Bethany or just want to explore that option, should consider joining this club. Children can make friends with future classmates and begin to have their own fun experiences at Bethany.
