Edible Education

Bethany's school garden

In spring 2011, cafeteria manager Joy Yoder and several volunteers planted a garden at the school that could provide an additional source of local fresh vegetables for the cafeteria and serve as a outdoor classroom for students.

As envisioned, Bethany's new 4th-5th grade class is finding the garden an excellent laboratory. So far they have helped with harvesting vegetables for the cafeteria, but will help with the planting of a new garden next spring. They also will be using the garden as they study soil and water, what grows well with other plants and what does not, and to relate all that they do in the garden with the environment, eating healthy, and staying healthy.

For an indepth story on the garden and how students are benefitting from it in the classroom and cafeteria, see the article "Edible Education: Experiential Learning at its Very Best" by Leah Schroeder in Edible Michiana.
