Innovative Music Learning
Bruin Jazz Connect with Composer
Members of Bethany’s Bruin Jazz enhanced their classroom learning as they recently connected directly with nationally-known composer and saxophonist Gregory Yasinitsky while they were learning a work of his, “Absolutely, Positively” to perform at the Midwest Regional Mennonite Orchestra Festival.
When Bruin Jazz teacher/conductor Barb Slagel learned that Yasinitsky was jazz mentor of the month for the National Association of Music Education, she had her students write down questions that arose as they learned his composition. Barb says, “This was a chance for students to understand the work better. Part of the learning process is simply thinking of the questions we have about the work. Also, we play so much jazz music from the big band era that we sometimes forget that jazz is a current, thriving art form. It was fun for the students to connect what we are doing in class with a living person.”
So instead of just learning to play this piece of music, Bruin Jazz students learned about the piece from the composer’s perspective. They also shared their learnings with students from the other festival schools learning the piece. Slagel says, “It made performing the piece at festival even more exciting.”
Yasinitsky too appreciated the opportunity to connect with youth performing his piece. In addition to graciously answering all their questions, he said, “Thanks so much for performing my music. I really appreciate it!”
This innovative idea drew the attention of others, such as the association’s band mentor Steve Damon. He wrote, “Great idea, Barb, to have your kids communicate right with the composer! Nice job, Bruin Jazz.”
The Bruin Jazz will perform in a coffeehouse and art show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Apr. 30. There is no admission charge. Come for an evening of music, art, and dessert.
