Girls Basketball Sectional

2012 sectional pairings

Bethany's girls basketball team lost to host Lakewood Park 49-47 in the first round of the Lakewood Park sectional. The team finishes the season at 11-10, matching matching its record from last year—the best since the 1997-98 team went 13-8.

The Bruins well-balanced team saw seven players share most of the playing time. The senior guard trio of Gina Gautsche (8.9 ppg, free throw percentage 71.2%), Malaina Weldy (7.6 ppg, 4.1 assists, 2.5 steals), and Alena Yoder (2.0 steals) provided outside scoring, speed, and defense. Malaina's triple threat was evident in early January when she almost posted a triple double with 10 points, 10 steals (second best in Bethany individual game),and 9 assists (tied for sixth best).

Inside, junior Natalie Thorne led the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game (ppg) and in rebounds with 7.6 per game, while sophomore Hanna Hochstetler averaged 8.3 ppg and shot nearly 50% from the field. A formidable defensive pair, Natalie's 7 blocked shots in December tied Bethany's single game record that she set last season.

Junior Laken Richer (4 ppg) and sophomore Marie Bontrager also played well and were significant factors (defensively and offensively) in the team's recent win over Westview—the first in more than ten years—and 20-point victory over no. 11 Argos.

Coach Krysten Parson says, "We are a very cohesive team that experiences success with selfless attitudes and hard work. We can rely on several people to do the scoring, but the real excitement comes when they begin to see how great they can be when they play as a unit on the court."
