Wilderness Experience

Grade 8 sets record for having entire class pass advanced orienteering during the middle school's Sept. 25-26 Wilderness Experience at Amigo Centre.

In the course, each canoe group must find hidden clues on the lake using a compass and clues on how to get from one location to the next. As a fun incentive, canoe groups get a utensil for their evening spaghetti supper for each task successfully completed. This is the first class to have all groups earn all their utensils.

The grade 8 class also spent the day and a half camping and learning other outdoor survival skills such as building fires, cooking over a fire, and canoe rescue, Grades 6-7 stayed in cabins and rotated among 6 different classes. This year's courses were introduction to orienteering, papermaking, canoeing, marsh study, archery, and cooperative games.

During the evening worship time, Gwen and Les Gustafson-Zook of Mennonite Central Committee led the group in worship songs around a campfire. Gwen also shared a story of peacemaking and the importance of listening to understand others
