Bethany students performed well in the state-mandated ISTEP exam with fall 2006 results above state averages. The state requires students to pass the grade 10 exam before receiving a diploma and in its December 2006 release of graduation rates showed Bethany's 98.1 percent graduation rate to be the highest in Elkhart County and well above the state average of 76.5%.

Bethany guidance counselor Jim Buller says, "This set of test scores, similar to the past several years, illustrates the academic strength of our students and their preparedness for taking the test. Also noteworthy is that most of our students who need further opportunities for passing the ISTEP-GQE find that Bethany provides them the needed resources for passing these set of tests, as illustrated by our very high graduation rates."

This year 85% of the class of 2009 (grade 10) passed both the math and English portions on their first try. Students not passing have two opportunities in each of their junior and senior years to pass the portion of the test they originally did not pass. The chart below shows comparisons from fall 2006 testing.

SAT scores released in fall 2006 show Bethany's average score for the class of 2006 easily surpassing those of state and national averages, as well as area schools. Bethany's average score of 1,670 is 177 points higher than the state average and 152 points higher than the national average--while only two area public schools surpassed the national and state averages. "This is particularly impressive given that our participation rate of 92% is also significantly higher than other schools," says guidance counselor Jim Buller. While state and national participation rates for 2006 were not yet available, they typically do not deviate significantly from last year's figures of 66% and 49% respectively. The following chart shows a comparison of Bethany's average score with local, state, and national averages.
