Athletic Program & Philosophy

These core values make up the Bethany athletic experience. Bethany students have the opportunity to be part of successful teams and grow as individuals within a community.

Balance: A significant Bethany distinctive is that coaches do not insist on their athletes specializing in a single sport, but encourage them to play others if they want. Bethany expects athletes to be dedicated to practice and participation in athletics—and also to academic success and participation in other activities at school and church.

Opportunity: With a strong emphasis on participation, Bethany seeks to provide opportunities for anyone desiring to participate in sports, regardless of skill level, while maintaining a competitive balance. Consequently, it happens that students who wouldn’t play athletics at other schools do so at Bethany—in fact, over three-fourths of our students choose to play at least one sport! Some students also participate off the court as managers, statisticians, scorekeepers, or timers. Bethany’s athletic program helps students find their niche in a supportive environment where they feel physically and emotionally safe, have fun while learning the basic skills of a sport, strive to do their best, and practice good sportsmanship and healthy competitiveness.

Success: High school teams have won more than 5 regional and 25 sectional championships! Additionally, many Bethany players and coaches have received area, district, and state honors for their successes.

Preparation for College: Bethany graduates are prepared to succeed at the college and university level. Coaches and teachers help athletes develop their skills on and off the field of competition and to balance athletic skill development and the rigors of academics. Typically about 20-25% of Bethany graduates continue playing athletics at the college/university level--with 2012 grad Femi Hollinger-Janzen advancing to play professional soccer for the New England Revolution.
