Bruins Boys Tennis won its first-ever sectional championship on Saturday, Oct. 4, with wins over Fairfield and NorthWood. The team lthen ost to East Noble 2-3 in regionals.

In the morning semifinal against Fairfield, the Bruins were trailing 2-1 against a team they had defeated 5-0 just a week earlier. While one of the two remaining matches was headed in the Bruins favor, the fifth and deciding match was not. The Bruins no. 2 doubles pair of Mikey Kelly and Daniel Buschert were down 1-5 in the third match, but fought back to win 7-6 (7-3).

In the championship against NorthWood, Bethany led 2-0 before no. 1 doubles pair Johnny Kauffman and Jeremy Thomas provided the clinching point, as the Bruins went on to win 4-1. "It was clearly our goal all season to be here and win this," said Thomas. The team returned all varsity players from last-years runner-up team and had defeated all sectional opponents during the regular season this year.

Coach Matt Miller said, "It has been a long time coming for this group. The seniors have been working toward this since thye were in eighth grade. They were the largest class of tennis players in Bethany's boys tennis history. They wanted to prove they could be competitive with the biggers schools in the sectional. They wanted to start a tradition in Bethany tennis, believing all along that something like this could happen."
