Bethany Students Studying Abroad in Paraguay

"Hey everyone! Being away from my friends, family, and school community has been hard, but I know I’ll be back before long. Life here in Asunción is different—my schedule, the food, even my hobbies—but I’m having fun with my host family and learning a lot." — Faith Miller

For the 2025 fall semester, Bethany sophomores Faith Miller and Sophia Leaman are studying at Colegio Alemán Concordia in Asunción, Paraguay—a semester that runs from July to December, corresponding to South America’s 2025 spring term. Sophia and her family traveled early to get her settled with her host family—which includes three host sisters and who speak Spanish and German—before classes began on July 28.

At this school, students learn in both Spanish and German. Many classmates also know English, which helps Bethany students transition smoothly while still offering a full language immersion. Sophia says:

“Everyone has been very welcoming and has helped me learn Spanish more quickly. People are even practicing their English to help me. I have had a wonderful time and recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their Spanish—it helps you learn so much faster.”

This semester abroad program is just one of our uncommon opportunities—hands-on, real-world learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. From studying abroad to garden-to-cafeteria practices and outdoor education, to interterm experiences and service projects, Bethany students gain unique opportunities that help them grow in faith, knowledge, and global understanding.

It’s been almost five weeks, and while part of me misses home, I know this will be an amazing experience for anyone who chooses to join the program. Go Bruins!” — Faith
