As part of Bethany’s Semester Abroad program, Faith and Sophia spent a semester studying in Paraguay, experiencing daily life, school, and community in a new culture and language. From traditional foods like chipa and Sopa Paraguaya to shared drinks like mate and tereré, everyday meals became a meaningful way to connect with classmates and a host family.
“Going to a foreign country that speaks a different language and getting to have that experience is worth spending three months away from your family.”
School life looked different, too—earlier start times, outdoor campus spaces, and a new schedule—but friendships formed quickly. With the help of classmates and a Spanish tutor, language skills grew through conversation, games, and shared experiences, making learning both challenging and fun.
Living with a welcoming host family was a highlight of the semester. Building relationships, traveling together, and sharing everyday moments made Paraguay feel like home. While being far from family and friends was sometimes hard, the experience of learning a new language, forming global friendships, and stepping outside familiar routines proved deeply rewarding.
This semester abroad opportunity reflects Bethany’s commitment to hands-on, real-world learning—inviting students to grow in independence, cultural understanding, and confidence in ways that last well beyond the classroom.
I want to thank Edgar for helping make this wonderful opportunity available to us and I hope our rising students can experience this, too!
